Debunking Waverly Hills Ghost Pogo Stick!

Debunking Waverly Hills Ghost Pogo Stick!

Posted by Ron T in Debunked, Featured Articles on 05 7th, 2010 | 82 responses

Good people!  I am asking for your honest and general opinion in regards to this video from Waverly Hills. I like the video, but I think soon it will be debunked and exploited.

Now, I have always said Waverly Hills is just a place for an opportunist (the owners) to exploit the passionately weak! When I say the “passionately weak”, I mean folks who want to catch the Holy Grail of all ghostly evidence and folks who truly believe the place is haunted. However, it’s my opinion Waverly Hills has hitched its wagon to the paranormal money cow after the place was considered haunted by some pseudo celebrities.

I like the location because of the intoxicating history and I’m not against making a money; however, I need solid proof (e.g., a sit down ghost interview) to command such an outrageous and inflated annuity ($100 per person) to roam the dilapidated buildings.

The original poster of this video writes: On August 24-25, 2008 the Will County Ghost Hunters Society conducted an investigation at Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky. During the course of our investigation one of our DVR IR cameras captured this video. A stick like object comes bouncing into the view of the camera. The object comes in and out of view several different times. There are is a mist that rolls across the hall towards the top of the ceiling. We have been trying to explain this object as something naturally occurring, but we have not been able to thus far. If anyone has an idea of what this can be please let us know.

After very careful Very review of the tape, and using frame by frame Annalise, It seems to me that the film has been doctored. It is an old trick used by photographers in three different ways one by using the the same camera marked in the same spot,at two different times. or a object on a clear screen, played over the original tape, then re-taped to make an original tape. the third is a plate of glass in front of the camera using a object behind the camera, to look like it comes out of the wall and then back in, there are signs that this was done by shadows that show in one frame and not another right after.

Wow! Impressive and the explanation is great! I find it hard to believe the video is real and how convenient to chose a child’s pogo stick.

I may put the video (guts )on the server for download.

    Again, great job.

I can prove that this is a fake! by using Split framing on the Video. Split framing is a process where you go between each frame where there may be more then three real frames between each frame shown on the Video. I can prove that there was a sheet of GLASS in front of the camera. and where the stick went to as it seemed to disappear.I have each frame and split frame written down. so I can show that this was faked. Thank you Ron

It is not a pogo stick just a broom handle with white cloth or paper and black tape set in it to appear to be an object with sections missing in it. If you notice the object when coming out of the wall in frame 03 is coming out on an angle \and off the ground, then becomes straight | then seems to hop out of frame, but it doesn’t it stops where it is bright the between frame 18 and 20 goes by the camera but not straight in frame 20 you will see it angle down, between frame 23 you will see it come back up where it went down then the shadows come in and I will leave it there.

Fishing wire obviously, observe the ceiling and also the tracking of the object. It transverses the same direction parallel to the fixture on the ceiling which is either electrical conduit or water pipe possibly sprinkler. May not even be either may have been deliberately placed there in hopes no one observes there is some sort of fixture on the ceiling that clearly the object tracks parallel to. The dancing around is obviously the object dancing around on fishing wire. Does not take TV producers to point that one out folks!

    Verklagekasper Says:

There’s no post processing necessary to achieve this effect. Just have a glass plate in front of the camera, and you hiding in dark space behind the camera with a light or some glowing object. Then move the light around. On film, you’ll only see the reflection of the light, while you are invisible.
This technique also explains why the stick hops like it was moved around by a (not so gifted) puppeteer. Because that’s in fact what is going on.

Bottom line, just more hiatus nonsense from bored people that paid a lot of money to see something and got nothing so a little fishing wire and an old galvanized pipe becomes a paranormal slinky. The place is littered with junk, not surprised by the video, amusing at the least.

once “quite comical” so maybe it is one of the stick creatures..Waverly is next a lot of wooded areas and that’s the habitat of the stick creature that walks upright…here is a link to them you can decide..

    unseen Says:

I have seen this effect plenty of times. The most logical answer is that is indeed a spider web. The IR light reflects upon the web but cannot focus on something so thin, which makes it appear thicker than it actually is. The reason it appears to be moving is simple. It is attached to a flying bug, most likely a gnat or mosquito. It also appears that the web gets stuck to the tripod on the camera at the end of the footage, which makes the insect move back and forth in front of the lens a few times until it breaks free from the web.
I highly doubt that the team that posted this would attempt to fake their evidence since it is so easily explained. Also take note that the team didn’t post this video as “proof” of anything, rather they put it out and basically asked “what is this?”
On a side note, I have been to Waverly Hills a couple of times. Yes it does cost money to investigate there, but the owners are sinking the money into restoration and property taxes (which is quite expensive for a place that size)
I cannot say for sure that the place is haunted, although I am pretty certain that there is indeed some paranormal activity going on there. I witnessed with my own eyes shadow people crossing the hallways. When I pointed my laser thermometer at them, I was astounded as I watched the laser “dissapear” several times. I also witnessed a ball moving around with no wind affecting it. Got a few EVPs as well.
It’s a huge building, and could be quite beautiful again when the complete restoration is done….although it needs a whole lot of work. I personally don’t mind paying a little bit to see a unique piece of our history restored. They are turning it into a hotel by the way, but it’s going to take a whole lot of money to achieve that goal. I for one support the Mattingly’s cause to completely restore the building into a hotel. If and when it becomes complete, it could be the most beautiful hotel in the United States. I am personally glad that they allow paranormal teams to investigate the place, and it looks as though they will continue to allow teams there after the renovations are complete. There aren’t many owners of buildings that size that allow investigations…aside from a few old prisons.
The building has an amazing history. I would hate to see it destroyed. I say support the commercial haunts such as these because the money is definitely going towards restoration. The owners truly aren’t making much because they are sinking most of the money back into restoring a unique piece of history, and property tax.
Sure they have to eat as well. Who doesn’t?
I support the Mattingly’s cause. It could be a beautiful building again. There is a lot of work that needs to be done because vandals have basically destroyed most of the asthetic beauty, but the basic beautiful architecture remains. It has stood the test of time. I cannot call these good people scam artists when I know for a fact where their money is going.
Is there some sort of paranormal activity taking place at Waverly Hills? I say yes. Does that prove that ghosts exist? I’d say no as of the moment. Is it a worthwhile place to investigate? I’d say definitely, if you are truly interested in exploring that sort of thing. Yes it isn’t cheap to investigate or take a tour, but in the long run a truly magnificent historic building will be restored. The footage above is simply a spider web attached to an insect, nothing more, nothing less. But there is other footage that suggests something strange is definitely happening at the place. The only way any of you can decide for yourself is to investigate the place. If you catch nothing, who cares? At least you contributed to restoring a beautiful building. It has a tragic history, but it is OUR history. It’s a real piece of America that we must remember.

Speaking of “inane babble” perhaps construction of a coherent sentence would better illustrate your point …

I wouldn’t call it an “insane grudge”, it’s simply fun to laugh at them because they epitomize the quintessential TAPS wannabee site full of para-rubes ;) …

BUT I have to agree that he or them are not worthy of further mention as my rant against them in the other thread was intended to illustrate the non productivity and futility of petty bickering and feuds within the paranormal community …

    @ GodOfWar
You want a coherent sentence? Let me simplify it for you.
Aanica brought up RH in response to a post that had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with RH.
It seems to be a pattern bordering on obsession.
I am NOT a member of the TAPS family, nor do I want to be member. Is that clear enough for you?
Most of your last post is off topic, but in your last sentence you state, “I find Waverly Hill fascinating yet it is obviously hitching to the proverbial “cash cow”.
I do agree that it’s expensive, but I happen to think it’s worth the money for a number of reasons; primarily because I would like to see the building restored. I’ll spend my money how I want to spend it. If I knew that they weren’t sinking most of the money into restoration, I would have never paid to investigate the place. The restoration is going to cost millions of dollars. I’ve worked in construction before and happen to know how much something like that will cost.If people believe they are making insane profits on the place, then they haven’t looked into the overhead. Keeping the place open is insanely expensive from a property tax standpoint, not to mention the cost of restoration.
Let me ask, would you rather see the building destroyed? As of the moment, there is practically no other way to keep the building open. If the Mattinglys decided to close the door to tours and investigations, then how would the building stay open? What would prevent it from being destroyed by the city? The place has a lot of issues that are constantly being addressed. Keeping up to code is just one of those ongoing issues, complete restoration is another.
I only posted because I happen to have investigated Waverly Hills, and I happen to have similar footage from other places which were proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to be a spider web. Nothing more, nothing less.
IR reflection creates some rather interesting effects, and this effect can be quite simply reproduced using a spider web or a hair.
I’m explaining this from EXPERIENCE, not from a standpoint of listening to what somebody else told me. I’ve seen this effect before on MY OWN camera. I’ve caught a spider web that made this type of effect with MY OWN hands. Is that clear enough?
This footage is NOT paranormal, nor do I believe it was faked. It’s simply some investigators that have no idea about how their cameras actually work. Hopefully they will figure it out in the future and stop posting videos such as these.

I have to admit that I didn’t read your interceding (rambling) post, but I assure you my summation of Waverly Hills was not based on your personal assessment albeit the fact that you undoubtedly reside in galactic core of the paranormal universe…this site(Waverly Hills)is the destination of many aspiring ghost busters so there are countless photos and documented investigations out there to refer to …
But I have agree that IR cameras and lighting is just another useless accoutrement in the TAPS emulating, wannabe arsenal that does little more than create blurry, indecipherable imagery and grainy, low quality videos …although it does help to conceal furtive movements by team members that attempt to nonchalantly tug on fishing lines :) …

I investigated Waverly Hills myself with a total crew of 12 people in the entire complex in 2007. We did record some pretty good EVP’s on the 5th floor. What bothered me was the fact that there are tree limbs growing into the broken windows of the building and the place has dense forest growth around it and full of animals. The staff feed a family of raccoons that are so big and fat they look like bears from a distance. Ghost Hunters never reported this fact when they were there for their first week long investigation and used evidence of that small black figure moving across the hallway on their thermal. This is when I first began to think something was fishy with Jay and Grant.

As far as this video is concerned,we looked at this along time ago and believe it is a hair caught in the front of the camera lens that gives you the illusion of the pogo stick moving.I have seen this before or something very similar like this on video cameras in very filthy places such as Waverly where all sorts of debris is airbourne.

As far as the Waverly claims, most are fraudulent. Instead of the 60,000 people that have been said to have perished there, it is more like 10 to 15 thousand.

Look up the work of John Amerine, a former employee at Waverly who is counting death certificates in Lousville. He will set everyone straight on the death count.

I do NOT believe the video itself is doctored. But I can tell you that is a piece of hair/fiber being dangled close to the IR camera being that we have done that before as a control experiment to have that footage to compare to when looking at other people’s video. The bright “lights” that flare the top of the screen, can be recreated with an IR light being bounced off thin materials like “halloween store spider webs”. This is also one of the reasons I am against DVR cameras and their low-res video quality.

To sum up the possible well-thoughtout ‘debunks’ in the answering posts above:

    1. Reflection
    2. Spiderweb
    3. Hair
    4. Hoaxed

Each one of these explanations is more likely then a paranormal “pogo stick.”

One must second guess debunking attempts when they become so convoluted and fanciful that they are actually less likely then simply suggesting any “evidence” is paranormal.

Each of the explanations above are simple, straight-forward, and more likely then the alternative. The investigator who submitted the film does deserve credit in regards to her open request for analysis, however, it is interesting that she didn’t come up with any of the possibilities herself.

Why not? Lack of analysis skills? An overwhelming ‘want of belief?’ A desire to generate a buzz hoping to increase Web site hits? All of the above?

Regardless, this video is an excellent example of the type of so-called “evidence” that many groups will post saying that they were unable to debunk it and thus it must be paranormal.

Keep up the good work Scifake!
