mark-johnsonWe want to thank Mark Johnson from New Jersey Paranormal Research (NJPR) with this story (below). Mark has the courage (unlike some others) to come forward and speak about the improprieties that HE witnessed while on set with the P.N.S. crew. I will make this clear, Mark assured me he did NOT witness fakery; however, he told me he was disgusted with how his client was treated and the lack of respect towards his client promoted Mark to speak his mind and I am happy he chose scifake.com for this article.

My opinion about Mark

I spoke with Mark today for approx. 45 minutes and I will tell you he presents himself as a straight shooter! One who in NOT afraid to speak his mind and I must commend him for his fearlessness.

Mark was on set for one day and since he has been in contact with his client.

Episode: Desperate Households

Mark’s Open Letter to Scifake about Paranormal State

As I mentioned previously I appeared on the “Desperate Households” episode of Paranormal State this last season.  The producers contacted me looking for new cases.  I was hesitant at first since I wasn’t crazy about the show, but I asked my clients from one of my cases and they were open to doing it.  I thought they’d just show up with a producer and a couple of camera guys.  Boy was I wrong!  They showed up with several equipment trucks and about 25 crew people and took over the entire neighborhood.  So much for being discreet, it quickly devolved into a complete circus.  They disrupted my clients’ lives for three days with cast and crew members trampling in and out of their houses and using them as a bathroom stop!  At the time I thought that the PRS team behaved themselves, but in recent talks with my clients I found out some things that seriously piss me off about Ryan and his team.

As for their “investigation” they were unmotivated.  My client overheard several of Ryan’s team members saying that they thought she was full of shit, so she confronted them directly and let them have it.  Ryan himself seemed distracted and uninterested whenever I talked to him, like he’d rather be anywhere else.  I actually liked Chad a lot, he was nice and seemed to take it more seriously than the rest of the team.

During “Dead Time” (don’t even get me started on that stupidity) Ryan’s team didn’t even try to investigate.  They sat around and attempted to record EVP’s, but it was clear they were bored.  Then they forgot their digital recorder and left it at the client’s house, so they never even attempted to review the evidence!  I wound up eventually mailing the recorder back to Sergey, but not before I listened to it myself to see how they conducted their dead time and it was clear they didn’t care.  The client was furious that they refused to take her situation seriously.

Then came the part where Ryan brought in their psychic-of-the-week.  This time out we got stuck with Michele Belanger.  Now I was not present when she (edit by admin) was there so I can’t say if the producers fed her information or not.  But I can say that when she was out in the back yard she said that she felt something was buried under the ground.  This was beyond laughable because the producers had brought in a ground penetrating radar team the day before to scan the back yard because of stories that human remains were found on the property when the house was first built.  So she was standing in the middle of several dozen little red flags stuck in the ground showing where the radar may have found something.  The producers were careful to film her from the waist up so that we couldn’t see the flags, then when they edited the show they made it appear that she did her reading in the backyard first, THEN they brought in the radar team, but it happened the other way around.

When my clients (there were two houses on the same street, so it was supposed to be a double investigation) agreed to do the show it was with the understanding that they would not use their last names on TV to have at least a small semblance of privacy.  So when the show airs we were horrified when Ryan blurts out my client’s full name on the air in the first 30 seconds!  We made angry calls to the producers and their response was, “Well, it wasn’t in the contract.”

Then they completely cut out one of my clients out of the show because she wasn’t “frightened” enough for the producers.  They decided to focus only on one family, but they still disrupted the other family’s lives for three days and she got nothing for her trouble.  On top of that the scene where I am presenting our evidence to Ryan and Chad was manipulated, and all that was shown on air was evidence from the house that was cut out of the show, but they made it seem like it came from the other house!

The final insult came about a month after the shoot when the producers wanted to film a follow-up interview with the clients to see how they were doing after the investigation.  The producers kept trying to feed them lines to say that PRS did a fantastic job and solved their problems (i.e. scripted!).  The one client totally refused, but they really didn’t care since they cut her out of the episode anyway.

Needless to say, I will never do one of these programs again and I’ve certainly learned my lesson.  It’s all scripted and manipulated for dramatic purposes.  It’s all about ratings and money folks, so don’t expect any of these TV teams to come in and solve your problems.  You are nothing to them, they just want to use you to make money.  Period.  My advice to anyone wanting to be on one of these shows is don’t, but if you’re determined then you must get all of your conditions IN WRITING up front in the contract!  Otherwise, you’re screwed.

I am impressed Ron! Thanks! Keep digging, as I see a slew of other previous investigators coming forward to share their experience with TV show paranormal investigators.

I hope this pushes the need further to regulate and impose all Paranormal communities to form an accountable organization to stop such persistent issues defacing true investigations.

Glad, I checked my email today!

I have never liked Paranormal State.

Did anyone ever see the episode where the team is investigating an abandoned church and Ryan was thrown down by a demon. And of course Ryan was holding the camera so the audience couldn’t see what exactly happened. Sure, Ryan.

How does Eileen Warren know about the fakery and unprofessionalism?

I have warned of PRS for a while now but not because of Fraud, but because of the devastation they themselves leave behind. I will say Chip is a good guy and a real Psychic. He is caught up in the “Movie Buz” and theres nothing I can do to smooth things over so I wont try to. I will say he does have a gift but the show uses it for entertainment so theres yet another thing I cant smooth over for him now. I will say Ryan started with good intentions but I noticed after the first season that he played on words and even didnt have any idea about much of the science needed to know in this field. I do know that many of the cases of demonic entities may have been faked but the real ones were not defeated and even attacked families even harder and the pattern is still the same. Entertainment is entertainment but when you disrupt a community then there had better be compensation because it goes from a reality show to a production and is disgusting the Producers and Team have gotten away with this for soo long. I know many cases they refused because they were too real for them lol. Oh yeah and for those who dont know, that Six is a REAL Demon and is attacking more then that family which it still attacks today. Most of the Pennyrile region of Ky is littered with its legions new and old, and it stretches all the way down the Green River from Ill, all the way to the top of Western Ky, but they didnt want anyone to know all that did they. My Organization is planning on going to Public Access with a Real Show and will make money only for the group through DVDs and only real evidence will ever be shown or even reviewed for showing. The real thing so there might not be so much all the time lol, and thats reality.

If anyone needs help in Most of the eastern United States I can get a real group or Exorcist to contact. There are many groups which are organized by Churchs just for that reason. In michigan I can contact G.P. Haggart in most of the rest of the eastern United States I can Contact Linda the Founder of Cross Light Paranormal who is an Ordained Reverend Exorcist/Demonologist and knows most of them. She appeared on Chips show in the first Season and like me can vouch for chips abilities but frowns on what PRS has talked him into doing.

Thank you Mark for coming forward with your story.

Being involved with the film/tv industry myself, it really disturbs me to hear a horror story such as this. It’s to be expected that a TV show would have a large crew, and a few grip trucks. However, courtesy to the neighbors and the clients should be a given (not to mention a heads up to what’s involved with a TV production), and it really gives a bad name to reality TV to hear a shoot handled this way. Not all reality television shows are like this, and while TV is a tough and stressful business, there’s no excuse for disrespect. I can understand the last name problem; it happens. Sure, they can’t be sued because it “wasn’t in the contract”, but no apology? Sick.

It is nice to hear that at least Chad seemed to be a nice guy. I think it’s important to remember that we shouldn’t issue a blanket accusation or assumption for everyone involved with the show. It’s really not fair. However, those that are deserving of criticism, should be criticized. If only more people would come forward with detailed accounts such as this!

    Mark Says:

Money and fame tends to corrupt people, and nowhere is that more true than in Hollywood. These evil production companies just simply do not give a damn about the families they “use” to make a buck with their television shows. These families do not get paid for their time or having their lives disrupted. They get nothing but the chance to appear on TV, and that’s not always a blessing for them. More often than not it causes more problems for them.

I feel responsible for what happened because I actually asked my clients if they wanted to do this. I didn’t think it would become the circus that it did, and if I had known I would have told the producers “no thank you” and just walked away. My job is to protect my clients, and I feel I let them down by allowing these vultures to use them the way they did. Thankfully my clients are still working with us as we continue to investigate their situation. Chalk it up to lesson learned.

Maybe it’s time for a recursive reality TV show: a “client” sets up some hidden cameras, and invites a TV para-celebrity reality TV team to come in and investigate, but based on a bogus (or real) haunt story. The teams’ true actions and statements are captured via hidden camera and aired to the world as just another TV reality show. (Smile, you’re on candid camera!) Now I’d watch that one for sure!

    @paraskep:

The PRS crew made a half-assed attempt to dig up a small portion of the yard, but it took too long and they had to continue to shoot their show. Whatever it is it’s buried deeper than they dug. The client has not tried to dig it up further because she’s worried it would stir up the activity in the house more than it is.

I’ve examined the actual radar images and there is definitely a large circle buried there under the yard with a point that points North. There are also five other “areas of interest” buried around the object that the radar people thought could be burials. But to be honest, as long as the client is unwilling to dig it up it will have to remain speculation. It could be an old septic system (although it’s much too large for that) or, based on what I see in the radar images, it could be a form of Native American stone Medicine Wheel.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medicine_wheel

We are going to continue working with our client to see if it would be possible to dig down to at least see what it really is, then once we catalog it we can respectfully recover it back the way it was. It’s still a work in progress.

Cracks me up in the beginning credits they say they receive hundreds of cases and only respond to the most serious…IMO its more like they ask 100’s of teams for cases and only air those few that they are lucky enough to get

    Orion Says:

    A couple of things:

Firstly, I’m very disturbed by the practice of paranormal groups (actually, just ghost hunting groups – if they were truly all about the paranormal, they’d investigate cryptids and UFOs too, among other things) staking out their “territory”, or claiming exclusivity to certain clients. This is just wrong. What right has any group to say their methodology or client handling is superior to anothers’, and try to prevent other groups from bringing perhaps a fresh, different perspective to the table? It’s disgusting. Ultimately, the choice lies with the client – so long as the client hasn’t been brainwashed by the group who simply got there first!

Back to the subject of “six”; I just watched “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” for the first time last night. I’m not usually into those kind of movies, though I like horror and scifi. I almost crapped myself when I saw the references to “six” and “3:00AM”. OMG, is that where Paranormal State gets their information and ideas- a freakin’ Hollyweird movie? Or is there a precedent for this “information” elsewhere?
Personally, I don’t believe in demons, per se, and possession. Malicious spirits, maybe, but I don’t subscribe to the very narrow religious dogma that is Catholicism, and the whole story of the fall of Satan. If you study history and religion, you can see how that story, and the role of Satan, changed and evolved over the centuries. If it were all so factual to begin with, there should be no such evolution or variance to the tale, and therefore, is largely a product of man’s embellishment and imagination.

And another thing, why is it that only catholics ever get possessed? I’ve never hard of a case of possession involving a Methodist, or a Lutheran, or a Presbyterian, for example.. or for that matter, a muslim, a hindu.. etc. It’s always these uber devout, fire and brimstone catholic families that kind of thing seems to happen to, and ..usually.. young women or girls at that.

Other religions and cultures do have claims of procession – its a belief from Zens to Hindus, even Shaman – many religions too, its truly a multi cultural belief and goes back to the begining of mankind’s recorded history

Hollywood tends focus on the Catholic beliefs but research and you’ll find Methodist and Lutherans and Scientology’s etc,,,all believe that one can be possessed
and have various rites, to cleanse one of it

Search Emily Rose find the original case, the movie was based on a real case, find that, you’ll see even more proof of those eerie coincidences that “I am six” and Paranormal State is nearly a carbon copy

Emily Rose was indeed based on a real set of people, just like “Six” — also just like “Six”, the original case could and should have been actually attributed to psychological disorders, mental/physical abuse (whether intentional or unintentional) and illness.

    NOT demons.

    Are you a psychologist?

“Emily Rose” was largely based on a German case involving a girl named Anneliese Michel…

@Ienpu: Because I have the gift and when it doesnt look remotely human as a soul does and data can be obtained through what I am claiming then it is true dont you think. Also I am not sure of Six, thats what other groups are saying, in any case it is a Demon and a possessor. I have recently exorcised one like it in Greensburg Ky, I cant say Six is really the Six, but I can say 4 other groups claim it calls itself that. I still need to go to pike lodge to check on that. In any case there are massive demonic hauntings all along the green river. Also I am not promoting a show at all. I said we might do one on Public Access, not network thus also not many viewers. It will also be boring for the most part lol. I will say that when a psychic claims something and has no backing through scientific data, then they are probably frauds or being deceived by a demon. I also want to say my beliefs in demons are not based on religious views as all other demonologists do. I use the gift to obtain scientific data to then compare to religious texts to weed out the superstitious none-sense from the actual truth. We can only go by what clients and other groups previously in charge of the case prior to it coming to us, and these groups are reputable thus probably not lying or adding info that didnt happen thus if they say its Six then we go by that unless we find its not.

@Cicely: Hate to tell you but my lead is a psychologist and yes some are related to mental problems but what you dont know is these disorders are a genetic mutation in their DNA and 90% of Possessed people Do Not have the Gene to cause it and are considered untreatable. Explain that one. Also explain how it stops through a House exorcism not a person exorcism. Theres no psychosematic jump to the mind in my exorcisms yet the clients no longer have the problems and even become fully cleared by a psychologist.

@paraskep: Yes I do agree there and to be honest there isnt as many possession cases out there as the Catholic Church wishes others to believe. An example is a Famous Bishop with the Independant Catholic Church who claims to have done a million exorcisms, but yet only has 1 thousand clients to validate his claim lol. Personally I have only done a few thousand myself in 24 yrs. Recently that has been going up but not so dramatically as the church claims. Just a rise in popularity and clients wanting to have a movie about them actually. None of my clients wish to be made public. Oh and I forgot to mention those thousand that will validate him are in his congregation only lol and this person and his flunky fail on every exorcism, its his popularity from T.V. that keeps him in business but most KY groups have stopped using him and are using us instead. Its a messed up world and people have become greed filled it seems. Heck I have a Book out but the money all goes to the Organization not me. Thats how dedicated I am to the cause. Just need the Org funding to travel to help others is all I am after.

@paraskep: They claim this but yet they dont respond to the bad cases really, M.M.P.I. in Michigan had to get me up there from Ky to help a client, PRS kept telling her to re submit and they will come, 6 mnths and 250 submissions on the case later I was contacted. Luckily my Friend G.P. Haggart in Michigan can take those cases now, I didnt know him then, but my stable and validated reputation has formed a good friendship. Hes a very good man and the real deal when it comes to Exorcists, so is Roderick Pyatt another of my Exorcists friends although we dont fully see eye to eye but thats because hes a religious demonologist also, but unlike many others he listens and researches what I say at least to show even he knows I may be correct.

@Orion: Not only Catholic become Possessed, thats just the popular religion for the movies lol. 3am is supposed to be the oppositional sign of the trinity, but in researching true demons, they do come out at 3am in force but because they are not human nor know time or keep time real demons come out any time of the day but they are most active around 3am and its easy to catch a false case in the winter because in truth the time doesnt change for demons like it does us thus it comes out at our 4am in the winter. Easy to catch a faker that way. This is one the untold ways we catch a fraud claim.

@Cicely: Nope, Vampires are a blood disease and genetic mutation as well as werewolfism and these are documented illnesses. Demons, they are different then you think. True Demons are not Fallen Angels, nor human spirits. They dont even have a stable core to sustain energy and demons have even been determined absolutely possible by physicists who believe they have just about obtained enough scientific data to state their particle make up. They havent got a clue on ghosts yet though lol. There are inner demons also but those are mental disorders that are treatable when the person has the specific gene to cause them. These things are being explored in depth by many science organizations sponsored by governments world wide. No, mine isnt one of them yet. We have to fully abide by Federal regulations to do that thus specific equipment is needed first. Heres the catch, that equipment toltal costs are about roughly $850,000.00 thus not just any group unless full of the rich can get this to happen and most of the rich in the paranormal have done this including John Zaffis even though hes questionable he makes it look legit. Spear and Warren is another example of this. Even some other good paranormal scientists have already done this and we are following that ones example not the first 2 lol.

I want to believe that these paranormal groups all started at some point with the most honest intentions. Maybe some of them did. However, no matter what some would like to think, at the end of the day we need to remind ourelves that these shows are made for tv entertainment with deadlines and the like. Reguardless of whether or not “evidence” is captured in a residence, they need, after a time, to make sure the audience is kept entertained so that the show will remain on the air.
As a paranormal investigator, I will say to all the other investigators out there.., I’m sure you know what I’m talking about when I say I wish my team was able to cature THAT much evidence in a year’s time! But we all know that it is just not that simple. People unfamiliar with the paranormal field watch these tv shows and assume that every paranormal group witnesses similiar “adventures” on a case-to-case basis. I have to remind my friends and family that most of the average investigator’s time is spent in utmost darkness and stillness with no evidence to show for it after. Although we’ve had our share of extraordinary paranormal moments within some investigations, it is hard to believe that these guys just so happen to “run into” paranormal happenings on practically every single case. Even cases labled (most severe) in our own past experience have been for the most part without an abundance of evidence.
I do believe that these disapointments have alot more to do with the tv producers rather than the teams themselves.., but the team members are just as much at fault for allowing to fall victim to or to go along with any fradulent evidence or misleading editing. Shame on all of them!
